It is common to class coins in the same category as banknotes – payment vehicles. But from the design consideration it should be noted that coins and medals are three dimensional objects. Similar to relief artwork, which is sculpture attached to a wall, the three dimensional elements rise from a flat surface. The designer has to work closely with the relief artist.

The main client for medals and coins designed by the Shamir Brothers were the Israel Coins and Medals Corp. and the Bank of Israel. Both bodies put the design of the items to tender and the winning design was used. Occasionally the client would split the work between two artists. The obverse side would be given to one designer and the reverse side to the other.

Medals were ordered by other clients as well including Government Departments, Universities, Municipalities and various private companies.

A unique medal was designed by the Shamir Brothers for the 30th anniversary of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. This design was also used for the postage stamp, the anniversary brochure and the poster commemorating this event. Other outstanding medals include a medal ordered by the Israeli Ministry of Defence to honour French VIPs following the Suez campaign in 1956 and a medal for Persia (today's Iran).

46 medals found in Gabriel Shamir's estate were placed by his heirs at the Kadman Pavilion of the Eretz Israel Museum.

In 1960 the Bank of Israel issued a set of coins for general use with the values of 1, 5, 10 and 25 agorot which remained in use for twenty years. The obverse (value side) of these coins were designed by the Shamir Brothers while the reverse side (the theme) was designed by Rothchild & Lipman.

New higher value coins (½ a Lira and 1 Lira) were issued by the Bank in 1963. This time the roles were reveres. Rothchild & Lipman designed the obverse (value) sides and the Shamir Brothers designed the reverse (theme) sides which included the State of Israel emblem that was designed by them in 1949.

In 1980 the Bank decided to use the State of Israel emblem design on the obverse side of the 1 New Agora and 5 New Agora coins.
